Edition one: The WHY of wellbeing
Hello and welcome to the first edition of our monthly ‘Purpose-built’ blog. We aim to bring you a periodic reason to purposefully pause…
In a world marked by intensity and unpredictability, investing in our wellbeing is not just a luxury—it's a necessity. The pressures of the modern era, compounded by the recent surge in burnout rates, indicate a critical need for individuals to prioritise their physical, emotional, and mental health. Despite good intentions, the path to better wellbeing often seems elusive. However, as we stand at the beginning of a new year, filled with resolutions and the promise of positive change, the question that looms large is: why do we struggle to make lasting improvements?
The statistics are stark; 50% of managers report feeling burnt out (Harvard Business Review). The abundance of information on wellbeing, coupled with increased support in business and more flexible work options, should ideally translate into improved health. Yet, many still find themselves paying a significant cost for neglecting their wellbeing. Why? Because the journey to better health requires effort—it's hard, demanding a level of commitment and resilience that can be daunting.
To break free from self-limiting behaviours and embrace positive change, we need a clear WHY—a purpose that goes beyond mere facts and data. The internal paralysis to change can only be overcome by a deep intrinsic motivation and a profound sense of purpose.
“Those who have a ‘why’ to live can bear with almost any ‘how’.”
Purpose, in this context, is more than a buzzword; it's about 'meaning in action.' As humans, we are inherently driven to make meaning out of our experiences. This meaning-making process serves two crucial purposes: first, understanding, largely to discern what is important for our safety, physical and psychological and second, to assign significance to things in our lives. Tony Robbins emphasises that nothing has meaning until we assign it.
The real opportunity lies in understanding what this second deeper form of meaning can unlock, the significance we attach to things. A wedding ring is a great example, is not just a shiny circle; it's a symbol of love and commitment, turning it from a piece of metal to a personal treasure. Recognising how we assign meaning allows us to choose where to invest our efforts —a dynamic force with action at its core.
Purpose is not a passive concept; it is a verb—a doing word. When we align our actions with what truly matters to us, we feel purposeful. This sense of purpose unleashes a deep emotional conviction, an intrinsic motivation that fuels us to persevere through challenges. As Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and renowned psychiatrist, once said, "Those who have a 'why' to live can bear with almost any ‘how'."
If genuine investment in wellbeing is the goal, then connection to purpose is the key. The journey to better health may be challenging, but when connected to a deeper sense of meaning, we find the strength to commit, persevere, and ultimately, thrive. So, as we embark on this new year, let us not just make resolutions but uncover the profound WHY that will propel us towards lasting wellbeing.
